It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Marc-André Leclerc. He was a beloved husband, father, son, and brother. Marc-André passed away on March 17th, 2020 at the age of 26 after bravely battling cancer for over a year. Marc-André was born on August 8th, 1993 in Rimouski, Quebec. He grew up in a small town called Saint-Léonard-des-Bois and later moved to Montreal to pursue his studies. After completing a degree in civil engineering at Concordia University, Marc-André began working as an engineer for SNC-Lavalin. He met his wife Alexandra while working there and they were married in 2017. Marc-André was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2019 and underwent treatment at the McGill University Health Centre. Despite the aggressive nature of his cancer, he remained positive throughout his battle and continued to live life to the fullest. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, going for walks with his dog Mia, and playing tennis. He was drawn to Cerro Torre for its beauty and its reputation as one of the most difficult climbs in the world. Leclerc began his attempt on January 11th, and made quick progress up the mountain. On January 12th, he posted a photo to Instagram from high on the east face, with the caption “Another day in paradise.” Sadly, that would be his last post. Sometime on January 13th or 14th, Leclerc fell to his death while climbing alone. His body was found by another team of climbers who were ascending Cerro Torre at the time. Leclerc’s death is a tragic loss for the climbing community. He was a talented young man with a bright future ahead of him. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
